About the author: Having studied Archaeology and Art History in Munich, Vienna, and Paris, Birgit Urmson married a gallant young U.S. Army officer, whom she had met when both were students in Paris, and moved with him to the United States. She took M.A. degrees in Art History and Environmental Design at the University of California at Berkeley, where she still holds courses. The family has been living in Oakland, California, since 1980. She has worked as a writer, researcher, film producer and film festival director, and she is a soprano soloist of note. After a profound experience in her own family, she has dedicated her energies to the development of artistic and musical talents in adults living with autism. Birgit Urmson possesses exactly the kind of universal culture which NICE highly appreciates.
